Testosterone is the fuel for a man’s engine but as we age, testosterone levels progressively decrease. This can lead to diminished sex drive, weight gain, loss of muscle mass, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and heart disease. Restoration of testosterone to levels that were present when we were younger can help reverse these effects but it is important to consider if signs and symptoms of low testosterone are present. Measurement of testosterone blood levels and other laboratory parameters is also necessary. Once all of these factors have been taken into consideration, a management plan to maintain an optimal testosterone level can be recommended.
Medication is effective for many men and is usually the first option used to improve erectile function and sexual performance. Some men respond better to one drug over another while some experience unwanted side effects. Trying the various choices available to find the medication that works best with minimal side effects is often necessary. Several of these medications are now available in a generic form, which can greatly reduce the cost of using them.
Approved in Europe and Canada to improve men’s sexual performance and satisfaction, focused shockwave therapy is now available in the United States. The same technology used to break up kidney stones in the body is used at much lower energy levels directly where it’s needed to improve erectile function and penile sensitivity. A course of treatment consists of six 15-20 minute sessions over three weeks. This therapy is completely safe, painless, non-invasive, and has little-to-no side effects. Normal activities can be resumed immediately afterward. Results can last a year or longer and intermittent repeat treatments can be used to maintain the results.
Trimix Injection Therapy
Commonly referred to as “Trimix”, ICP (intra-cavernous pharmacotherapy) is more reliable and effective than pills and has no systemic side effects. ICP is easy and painless to administer, works quickly, and can be customized to last as long as you’d like to last (within reason)! If desired, during your initial consultation you will receive a dose of Trimix administered by the physician. This “test dose” is used to gauge each individual’s response to the medication in order to guide use at home. Patients requesting ICP therapy will be supplied with medication, training, supplies, and ongoing support in using this therapy.
